Let’s keep it one hundred; the hustle is real! Even as a student!

There’s a lot we need money for. To get some study resources, for the pocket drainer that is the Internet, to get a new device or even a new dress.

There’s always a need for more money than the allowance from our parents.

In this article, we will discuss entry-level, low-experience remote roles that you could take up while in school. We’ll also give you a few tips on how to get started.

The Novelty of Remote roles

Remote jobs are not new, but the Covid-19 pandemic made everyone see it as a more effortless and safer way to work.

Although the health risks associated with the pandemic have reduced since the vaccines, it has become clear that remote roles are not going anywhere soon.

People love remote jobs. They love the flexibility of remote work, and some even say they have noticed more productivity in working from home.

In fact, according to a report by Owl Labs, 32% of the survey population indicated that if they could not continue working from home, they would resign from their positions.

As a student looking for work, this is good news! This means you don’t have to worry about commuting from classes to your workplace and can work from the comfort of your dormitory.

It also means that you don’t have to worry about your academics taking a hit as, with proper time management, you can continue excelling in your studies while making money by the side.

1. Social Media Manager

Social media is a tool no company dares ignore, small businesses and large enterprises. It has become essential in all marketing efforts.

Because most brands are aware of this, the demand for social media managers is always on the high side.

Huge companies need someone who can integrate social media into their marketing strategy. At the same time, small business owners want to outsource their social media management to focus on other parts of business growth.

One mistake you could make is thinking social media management involves posting and responding to comments and direct messages. Social media management is more than that.

Some essential skills that make an efficient social media manager include; copywriting, content strategizing, and analytical skills. A social media manager also needs to be creative, a quick thinker, and stay on top of trends.

Take courses on social media management on e-learning platforms like Udemy, Coursera, and LinkedIn learning. You can also watch some innovative videos on YouTube.

2. Virtual Assistant

A virtual assistant is someone who does all the roles of an executive assistant from the comfort of their home.

The roles of a virtual assistant include administrative duties like:

  • Management of calendars and schedules
  • Travel arrangements
  • Email monitoring and organization
  • Answering and directing phone calls
  • Accounting and billing activities
  • Creating and keeping records
  • Vetting potential clients, projects, partnerships, and so on.
  • Maintaining or updating a client’s social media or professional profile

To become a Virtual assistant, you need to invest in courses on e-learning platforms and watch YouTube videos.

Also, ensure you actively promote your skills on your social media platforms, particularly Twitter and LinkedIn.

A website would help with showcasing as you gain more work experience.

3. Proofreader

Ask any African millennial what jobs were available for them while they were in school, and about eighty percent will mention Proofreading!

Proofreading is the final step in the creation of written text before publishing. It is checking for spelling or grammatical errors, fixing style inconsistencies, and formatting for accuracy and fluency.

All forms of writing require Proofreading, but academic writers are stricter about this, mainly because they have to watch out for plagiarism.

Watch Youtube videos on Proofreading, read articles and hone that skill.

4. Data Entry

A data entry operator is someone that enters information from one system into another using a computer. A company might need to collect prospects’ email addresses, names, and other details from a document and input it into a website or vice versa.

It is one of the most remote-friendly jobs right now. All you need is a computer.

You should, however, watch out for scams. Make sure you don’t pay any money to buy data entry software or get a data entry gig.

5. Translator

Our Bilingual girls, get in here!

The world is becoming increasingly accommodating, so information must be available and communicated in languages everyone can understand.

Here are the steps needed to become a paid translator:

  1. Learn another language and become fluent in it. You must be eloquent in at least two languages to become a translator.
  2. Get specialized training. Being fluent in two or more languages is excellent, but translation is an art, and you need to master the art of translating.
  3. Obtain Certification. We all know that having a certificate in any career increases your legitimacy. So legitimize your skill with a certificate.
  4. Choose a niche and familiarize yourself with the terminology. Learn legal terms if you’re interested in the legal industry or medical terms if that’s what you want.
  5. Get some professional experience. The best way to convince someone to hire you is by showing you have experience, and the best way to get experience is by volunteering. Research on nonprofits or community organizations and offer your skills for free.

If you have been considering learning a new language for a while now, this is your sign to start!

Closing

There you have it, five remote roles that would give you an extra source of income as a student and help you gain relevant work experience before you leave school.

Fiverr and Upwork are two renowned platforms for getting well-paying freelance remote jobs. Also, utilize your social media channels to promote your skillsets.

Take courses when needed, practice frequently, and you’re on your way to steady income growth.

Why Now Is Still a Good Time To Start a Business https://leadingladiesafrica.org/why-now-is-still-a-good-time-to-start-a-business/ https://leadingladiesafrica.org/why-now-is-still-a-good-time-to-start-a-business/#respond Mon, 11 May 2020 01:30:05 +0000 https://leadingladiesafrica.org/?p=18588

To most people this may not seem like a great time to start a new company, but that’s exactly why it is. If you follow conventional wisdom, then this is likely the worst time to start a new business. People are more conservative in their spending amid the pandemic, hiring is much harder when you can’t interview candidates in person, and trying to build a team remotely is incredibly challenging. And good luck getting a bank to return your calls for a loan or securing early-stage venture funding, which has slowed significantly.

I’m not going to argue with any of that. It’s all true.

As odd as it may sound, there are significant advantages to starting a business right now. Some are straightforward and easy to see, once they’re pointed out. Others are much more subtle. To be clear, it won’t be easy. Starting a business never is. But if you were already in start-up mode, or if you’re debating going into start-up mode because of the current economic climate, then stop and think about the following.

The Talent Glut: A great time to attract and collaborate with top-quality players & Team Members

First, the greatest single challenge in starting a new business is attracting talent, especially senior-level people whom you can bring on board as partners. When things are going well, these folks are nearly impossible for a start-up to attract unless it’s very well funded. Many of those same people are now wondering what their next gig is going to be.

For the foreseeable future, we are likely to experience a glut of talent. If you’ve got a killer idea, this is a great time to attract and collaborate with top-quality players. The same goes for the sort of talent you need to help with the many operational pieces of starting a new business, such as setting up your website, creating your branding, or support and administration.

By the way, if you’re thinking that this is a great way to save money, you’re right, but you’re also missing the bigger and more important point. What’s non-intuitive is that anyone you bring on board now will end up being a much more dedicated, faithful, and committed team member, because you not only gave them a lifeline, but you also bonded with them and together succeeded during a time of crisis and overcame the odds.

The Entrepreneurial Space is Open To Change

Secondly, something magical happens during an economic or social crisis that is incredibly supportive of a new venture. The heart and soul of entrepreneurship is experimentation. Yet markets are often less than receptive when it comes to change.

However, in times of crisis there is an expectation that we are looking for change–we accept that we’re all building a new normal and part of that will be finding new ways to live, work, and play. You can make egregious mistakes and suffer far less, if any, market setback as a result.

Yank the Safety Net

Thirdly, you are now operating without a safety net. But, wait, that doesn’t sound like a good thing, right? Shouldn’t you have more reason to be scared of that scenario? Yes, you should, and that’s a good thing, for you.

Look, you’re an entrepreneur, and that means that you aren’t likely taking the easy road to anywhere. You rise to meet challenges head-on; while others may look for the safe path to mediocrity, you’re looking for the tough path to excellence. Taking away the safety net from anyone else would paralyze them. For you, it just heightens your focus and commitment.

Nobody wakes up in the morning and says to the universe, “Hey, throw uncertainty, economic turmoil, and social distress at me, and while you’re at it yank the safety net.” But when the universe decides that’s what it’s going to throw your way, maybe your response should be, “Thanks, that’s just what I need!”

4 Ways to Prove Your Productivity When Working From Home https://leadingladiesafrica.org/4-ways-to-prove-your-productivity-when-working-from-home/ https://leadingladiesafrica.org/4-ways-to-prove-your-productivity-when-working-from-home/#respond Tue, 28 Apr 2020 01:00:20 +0000 https://leadingladiesafrica.org/?p=18469

As a remote worker, it isn’t always easy to show that you’re productive and invested in your job. It’s not that your colleagues or manager are trying to assume the worst about you, but when they don’t see you every day, they just don’t have a ready image of you hard at work. (And if they’ve never worked remotely much themselves, it may be hard for them to picture what it looks like in practice.)

The truth is it’s up to you to show your boss how dedicated and effective you are—even if you’re sitting on your couch instead of in a cubicle nearby them. If you think your boss may be questioning how you spend your work-from-home hours, here are some strategies to prove your productivity.

1. Be Reliable and Responsive

In an office, your boss can see, plain and clear, that you’re working away at your desk all day. When you’re at home, you can send the same message by being responsive and available online.

This means that you should be attentive to your phone, email, and instant messages throughout the day and that when you receive a request from your boss you respond as soon as possible. You don’t have to drop everything and tackle their request right away, but do respond quickly with a realistic timeframe of when that task will be complete. Many times a simple response—“I’ve received your email and this will be complete within the hour”—works great. Then make sure you follow through on that deadline.

2. Keep Updates to a Minimum

That said, don’t go overboard on the communication front. While you may think constantly updating your boss on what you’re doing and how projects are coming along is a great way to show you’re working, don’t do this. After all, your manager hired you to make decisions and get your work done, and if you’ve been given the green light to work remotely, you’re being trusted to manage your own time. Sending your boss hourly emails is unnecessary—and may even cause them to lose confidence in your ability to get the job done on your own.

Instead, meet with your boss periodically to ensure you’ve set clear expectations for your work, with hard deliverables and deadlines, and then follow through on them. Sure, occasional updates are necessary, but in general, let the real work speak for itself.

3. Be Present When You Get Face Time

One of the easiest ways to impress your boss and coworkers is to be extra engaged when you do get a chance to interact with them—namely, on the phone or during video chat meetings.

While it’s tempting to multitask (by checking your email or responding to that IM), you’re better off focusing only on the meeting at hand. If you’re paying attention, you’ll be able to ask questions, contribute ideas, and pick up on important bits of information—all things that help show you’re an engaged member of the team.

Also, try to “arrive” at meetings a few minutes early, as it’ll give you the chance to participate in the organic conversations that typically take place in person. This is your chance to ask what your colleagues are working on and share updates on all the work you’re doing, too. Plus, if you work remotely full time, the more your team gets to know you as a real person on the other end of that call or video chat, the more likely they are to give you the benefit of the doubt.

4. Don’t Pick Up Extra Tasks Just to Create Visibility

Offering to help with extra projects might seem like a great idea—you’re so productive that you have time to take on tons of extra work! But putting unnecessary tasks between you and your key goals may take away from your success. Best-case scenario, you may get everything done, but it may not be your best work. Worst-case scenario, you won’t be able to finish everything and your boss will begin to question your ability to see projects through.

Again, you’re being trusted to manage your time wisely, so be very selective about extra tasks and responsibilities you take on. If you really want to get involved with a project that’s outside the realm of your job, go for it, but talk to your boss about how you might adjust your workload to make room for it.

Proving your productivity when your boss can’t see you isn’t easy. But if you focus on deliverables, make yourself available and present, and work to build a relationship with your boss and coworkers, no one will question your productivity or commitment to getting the job done.

”Finding happiness at work is not always related to actions and cognitions related to the work itself” 10 Tips for Finding Happiness at Work https://leadingladiesafrica.org/not-happy-at-work-here-are-10-tips-for-finding-happiness/ https://leadingladiesafrica.org/not-happy-at-work-here-are-10-tips-for-finding-happiness/#respond Mon, 28 Oct 2019 04:55:07 +0000 http://leadingladiesafrica.org/?p=14350

Happiness altogether is a highly subjective experience. Individuals are likely to feel happier when they have other happy people around them. Finding happiness at work is not always related to actions and cognitions related to the work itself. It is associated with many other correlates like work environment, personality traits, interpersonal connections, stress management skills, and the list goes on. Here are ten simple ways that can help us in rediscovering workplace happiness and sustain it for a long time:

1. Declutter your Workplace

The phrase “a cluttered desk means a cluttered mind” is perhaps correct. Getting creative with the workspace can enhance feelings of exhilaration and refresh the mind. It reinforces concentration and is a great way to feel good at work every day.

2. Mindfulness

“People wait all week for Friday, all year for summer, and all life for happiness”

Mindfulness is not a buzzword, neither is it an overrated concept. The effects of mindful meditation are real and proven. People who practice mindfulness and meditate before or after working hours feel more connected to and more emotionally stable at work.

3. Work it out

A 15-minute daily workout routine makes the body energetic and releases the toxins that cause the weariness. Any form of exercise – walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, or anything else, is bound to bring more productivity at work, more energy to give it the best shot, and more fulfillment throughout the day.

4. Engage in Feedback Mechanisms

Decisive and immediate feedback are predictors of workplace happiness and job satisfaction. Studies have shown that employers or supervisors who regularly offer feedback and acknowledge efforts are more successful in having a happy team.

5. Reflect on One Task at a Time

Multitasking ‘wastes more time’ and can be the reason of unhappiness among professionals at different levels. When juggling with various tasks at the same time, it is almost impossible to devote an equal amount of attention to each detail, thereby resulting in distractions. To avoid this, we can prioritize our to-do list and focus on dealing with the more important tasks first. Applications like AnyDoWunderlist, and Evernote has made this easier to accomplish.

6. Help a Colleague

Althruists in the workplace are more likely to feel satisfied and are happier at work. The level of happiness that we derive from helping others cannot be equated with anything else in the world. It gives a sense of empowerment, enhances wisdom, and makes us feel more connected to the organization. Simple acts of kindness, expressions of gratitude, and offering support to colleagues in times of need can make us feel a lot better about ourselves and make us happier at work.

7. Choose your Responses Wisely

Regularly practicing mindfulnessgratitude, and effective communication can ease the stress and help employees in progressing towards their goal and make you happy.

8. Value yourself

“Nothing can bring you peace, but yourself.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Work stress often makes us forget our real worth. A gentle reminder to self, a little throwback to the past achievements can work wonders in bringing back the happiness at the workplace. Happiness is sustained when we can step back and take a moment for appreciating ourselves.

9. Start Your Day on a Good Note

Take some moments each morning to collect your thoughts and plan your day ahead. Go for a walk, sip a hot coffee and create your goals for the day. A day that is started well is more likely to bring in more productivity and yield more fruits.

10. Adjust your Schedules

Effective communication is the key to happy work life. Happy professionals are always one step ahead in maintaining and following a flexible schedule. Prolonged working hours without breaks can take a toll on the brain and bring us down, thereby making way for unproductively and distress. We can fully utilize our intellectual powers when we are feeling confident and happy. In a happy state of mind, creative ideas flow in and we are better at problem-solving and decision-making.

3 Major Tips to Boost Engagement and Grow Your LinkedIn Network https://leadingladiesafrica.org/3-major-tips-to-boost-engagement-and-grow-your-linkedin-network/ https://leadingladiesafrica.org/3-major-tips-to-boost-engagement-and-grow-your-linkedin-network/#respond Tue, 24 Sep 2019 12:25:00 +0000 http://leadingladiesafrica.org/?p=15000

As a professional, you need to have a LinkedIn account. It is also not enough to just have it, you also need to optimize it, boost your engagement there and grow your LinkedIn network. So how can you achieve all of these? Read on!

Curate your timeline with the most relevant content

LinkedIn will populate your timeline with content that they feel is most relevant to you. This includes posts and content from your 1st connections (usually the ones you engage with most frequently), hashtags you follow, related content that you’ve engaged with previously, and more.

Follow top influencers and thought leaders in your industry

Not only is this a great way to stay up to date on trends and hot topics in your industry, it’s also a great way to build relationships with successful professionals for potential collaborations and virtual mentorship.
This step will take some dedicated time and research. You may be able to find these people a little easier by doing a quick Google search like, “top tech professionals on LinkedIn.”

Like, comment, and share posts that are relevant to your brand and also support the work of others.

This is how you can further develop some of your relationships with LinkedIn thought leaders an others in your industry. If there is someone you admire or see posting great content consistently, make a habit of liking and commenting on their posts. When you comment, make sure to leave meaningful comments, because when you leave comments on someone’s post, now their entire network has access to see your comment/subject matter expertise. You’ll need to share your expertise and opinions as it relates to the posts, so you can attract more followers and better network.
